but different, the natural width around the toes is not as square, the top of the ship comes up higher on the top of the foot and the back part of shoe that goes up the back of the heel is higher so when you bend, when driving or point your toe it digs into the back of your leg.

Additional thoughts: I was wearing no-show socks and they slipped down a little and I made a mental note to wear different socks because I didn't feel like untying shoe laces to adjust socks; they will probably do well for all day and longer walks depending on your foot comfort; I'm hoping the leather will loosen up a little with wear.

I will note they came with inserts, which I didn't notice at first (and made me assume they were too small).

Now be ware when you put them on before you tie them adjust the tongue the seam is a little weird on the underside of the tongue and if not placed correctly does cause some discomfort, definitely not a deal breaker, just gotta straighten the tongue up so it doesn't sit right on top of your foot.

The foot Dr. told me I needed shoes with a very wide toe box, so that my feet have enough room to spread when I step on the ball of my foot.

but beware, the extra wide width means any inserts you use that arent wide width themselves will have an edge or gap betw the shoe and the insert which may cause blistering.

but check the rubber toe bumper on the inside before keeping I tried several different New Balance shoes, so far this one is the winner for my medium arch, narrow heeled feet with moderate bunions.

Very little difference between the size 9 wide and 9.5 wide, so will probably size up for a little extra room since most people tend to buy shoes too small for their feet.

It's been my experience that items returned as defective just get recycled (put back out for sale), so whoever buys a size 9.5 wide in the navy check the left shoe!

The same shoe in the size 9 wide navy does not have the problem. In the grey version I ordered (very pretty color!)

but not the 9.5 wide so I guess it's very hit or miss - if you like them enough you may have to keep trying until you get a good pair.

Being a laced shoe, you can customize the fit a lot more than one with a Velcro closure.
