It's a rubber shell with a think hard piece of plastic in the middle and hurts your feet if you stand on them longer than 15 minutes.

They do run large and they are not good for walking outside

The bottom is thin so if your toddler is walking, it may not be a good idea to wear on rocky surfaces.
