I have 2 pairs of the older version Speedgoat Mid GTX, which are absolutely stellar!

but these hiking boots are extremely narrow and they pinch my ankles.

They are extremely chunky, the soles will make you taller and the way the sole sticks out from the heel might feel odd at first and take some getting used to.

The padding finally started to compress after 8 months!

Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks to Hoka boots and shoes that anyone with real experience will tell you is that those amazing thick and cushy luxury EVA soles they have just don't hold up for a long time.

The soles just aren't thick and rigid enough to protect your feet from what you're stepping on.

I think their bulk and unique soles put some people off at first because it feels a little weird until you get used to it,

I am on my third hoka One One Boots, and I was excited to see if the low back would help even more with shin splint, that is a personal issue zi deal with.

Perhaps the most perfect hiking boot ever.

My very first pair of hiking boots when I started this job were the Hoka One Speedgoat Mid trail runners and I loved them. .

I switched to Salomon boots and hiking shoes which are my favorite every day hikers and have been for years now.

I've had several ankle rolls while hiking in these boots and none of them actually hurt or weren't easily walked off.

This is my second pair of the Hoka hiking shoe.

The first pair I bought and used every day, in the rain, snow and hot summer for a 2-4 mile hike with my dog.

That being said, they are looking almost as good as new after Peru and 2 months of local hiking, so I will have to update when they do start to degrade.

BUT even if and when they do, I must say that at least for a big hike like the Inca trail, they were worth EVERY PENNY.

In fact, even if they only last me a couple years on my local trails, I'm at an age now where the protection from the impact of hiking on my feet, knees, ankles and hips that these boots offer is worth the price, as steep as that is, even if they don't last as long as other brands and models.

Here were my criteria: - The softest, most comfortable boots I could possibly find - COMPLETELY waterproof in reality, not just on paper - Durable - Super traction - Laces that stay laced and don't drive me bonkers - Don't look totally ugly - Require very little break in time These boots checked every single box for me and then some, and trust me, I put them TO THE TEST!

-  GREAT grip and traction -  You will not find boots with a more comfortable sole that shields your feet from feeling all the rocks and tree roots and trail debris you step on.

I really love the locking laces the enable you to customize where the boots are tight and where they are looser.

This is a game changer for people like me who tend to get numb toes when boots are laced too tightly over the bridge of my foot.

I just got my second pair and they are more waterproof than my old pair (in which my feet never got wet or cold), I put them on and off we went.

These clean up really nicely with a wet cloth and look great again!

Just had a week hiking in the Cantabrian mountains in these boots, and they were perfect for the warmer weather:  Super comfortable, supportive and light weight.


The grip on these shoes was a big upgrade from my last hiking boots.

I did several intense hiking days with them so far and had no foot issues, whereas in the past I normally have always struggled with blister and sore feet.

New Balance Men's 481 V3 Mid-Cut Hiking Shoe

They only has EEEE and the heel is a bit too wide.

but the Eddie Bauer boot did not fit correctly; either too big or too small--probably because a wide width was not available.

New Balance does run a little narrower than most USA brands,

A few notes: 1) not as wide as many 4E's,

If you struggle with 4E width being slightly narrow, these might not be the right choice.

I wear out a pair of Walmart boots about every 6 months and wasn't really surprised when they started coming out of the box ill-fitting.

All of the above is to say these are the slipperiest shoes I have possibly ever worn; far worse than the Asics or any of the hiking boot/shoes.

It truly takes the joy out of hiking when you are not able to take regular strides because you are worried about slipping and then, you slip anyway.

left and right shoes do not feel the same size and visually lack symmetry.

They are very supportive, despite the light weight.

I have had many different hiking boots (Vasque Monolith, Keen Utility Flint, Dunham Cloud, Carhartt CMH4375, Merrell Moab and Moab 2) and all of them are far superior to regular trainers for traction when hiking.

I would buy them again, based on the limited selection in 12 4E, provided I was buying a lightweight duty/hiking boot.

I buy New Balance shoes because they come in a wide width.

Like other New Balance Shoes, I am very happy with this shoe.

but that does not diminish my like and endorsement of this New Balance hiking shoe.

Anyway, I gladly paid more for the New Balance shoe because it fits correctly and my experience and opinion is that New Balance makes a superior product.

Stick to better brands that have better waterproofing if you hiking anywhere with water.
