One thing I have noticed is that some Asics models do not have adequate toe protection, and those need to be avoided.

but no matter how loose I tied them, the opening around the ankle felt stiff and kinda annoying.

The shoes are true to size and provide excellent support for road running.

The GT-2000 7 is his 4th or 5th pair of Asics after being fitting for them years ago in the top local Running store, where they let him run around the block in each of their shoes.
