However, on the upper back ankle, the foam has disintegrated inside the cloth from where I grab it to pull the shoe on.

On one shoe, the cloth at that part has worn through to show the inner foam.

After breaking in, the material all around the foot is so pliable it is like old canvas.

The only downfall with them is there is almost no traction on the soles, so be very careful walking on slick surfaces like hardwood flooring or garage floors.
